Sredets is the heart of Sofia — the stately central district holding Parliament, Sofia University, the museums and the "Bulgarian Broadway" along Rakovski Street, together with the northern part of Borisova Gradina. A prestige address of early-20th-century classic buildings — with no panel housing estates.
Sredets district covers the historic core of the capital, on top of ancient Serdica — Roman walls still surface with every new excavation, and stretches of them are on display in the city-centre underpasses. Only 3 sq. km in area and home to around 32,000 people, it concentrates Bulgaria's state institutions and cultural life.
The National Assembly, the Presidency, the Bulgarian National Bank, Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, the Archaeological and Natural History museums and the 4th-century St George Rotunda. Rakovski Street, with its nine theatres, is known as the "Bulgarian Broadway", while the northern part of Borisova Gradina brings the Vasil Levski National Stadium and the Bulgarian Army Stadium.
Housing is classic early-20th-century masonry and stately brick cooperative buildings — there are no panel estates here. Apartments are among the most sought-after and expensive in the country, with ground floors alive with galleries, cafés and boutiques. Serdika and SU St. Kliment Ohridski metro stations frame the district, and everything else is within walking distance.
